Cardi/o
Pertaining to heart
Vascular
Veins and arteries
Purpose of cardiovascular?
Transport blood to and from every living cell in the bodyÂ
What do our cells need in order to function
What does blood deliver to each cell?
Oxygen, nutrients, water, hormones, white blood cells
What does blood remove from each cell?
Waste(ex. CO2)
What is the heart?
A pump made of cardiac muscles
pumps blood to the body cells and lungs
Beats 72 beats per minute, made of 4 chambers
What are the 4 chambers?
L and R atrium (top), L and R ventricle (Bottom)
What are the 3 layers of the hear
Epicardium- top layer
Myocardium- middle (muscular) layer
Endocardium- sits on inside of ventricles
What is Blood?
Made of cell and plasma
Function: transport RBCS and plasma, fight infections(WBCs), and clot blood (platelets)
3 maint typed of blood vessels
Arteries: carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body cells
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels that connect arteries and veins at the body cells
Veins: carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart from the body cells
Superior Vena Cava
Inferior Vena Cava
Delivers deoxygenated blood from the upper body to the right atrium (veins)
Delivers deoxygenated blood from lower body to
Right atrium
Pumps de-enated blood to right ventricle
Tricuspid Valve
Opens pass blood from right atrium to right ventricle
Right ventricle
Pumps de-genated blood to the lungs
Pulmonary Valve
Opens to pas blood from right ventricle to pulmonary arteries (Pulmon-: lungs)
Pulmonary Arteries
Carry from right ventricle into the lungs
Aveoli
Air-sacs in lungs
Pulmonary veins
Carry oxygenated blood from lungs to LEFT atrium
Left Atrium
Pumps oxygenated blood to left ventricle
Bicuspid Valve
Opens to pass blood from Left atrium to LEFT ventricle
Left ventricle
Thickest heart chamber
Pumps oxygenated blood to entire body
Aortic Valve
Opens to pass blood from ventricle to aorta
What is the Aorta?
Largest artery
Carries oxygenated blood away from left ventricle to the body
Septum
Separate right and left sides of the heart to keep oxygenated and de-genated blood separate
