Communication
The process of sending and receiving messages through verbal and non-verbal means.
Impairment
A loss or abnormality in psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function.
Disability
A reduction in the ability to perform tasks within the range considered normal for a human being.
Disorder
A disturbance in the normal functioning of a system.
Difference
A variation in speech, language, or communication style that is not inherently indicative of a disorder.
IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which ensures educational rights to children with disabilities.
SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist, a professional who diagnoses and treats speech and language disorders.
Audiologist
A professional specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders.
Mean Length of Utterance (MLU)
A measure of the average length of a child's utterances, used in language assessment.
Aphasia
A language disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A developmental disorder characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behavior, and communication.
Neurodiversity Movement
A social movement advocating for the acceptance of neurological differences as a variation of human diversity.
Theory of Mind
The ability to understand that others have thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives different from one’s own.
Dynamic Assessment
An evaluative approach that measures a learner’s potential through interactive testing.
Standardized Assessment
A method of testing that measures a client’s performance against a standard set of criteria.
SMART Goals

Cranial Nerves

Dysgraphia
A learning disability that affects writing abilities.
Paraphasia
A language impairment where a person substitutes words, leading to incorrect or nonsensical phrases.
Phonemic Paraphasia
An error where a sound substitution occurs in speech.
Semantic Paraphasia
An error in which a person substitutes a word with a semantically related word.
