Presence of GAMMA BENZOPYRONE NUCLEUS
Result: orange to red to crimson & magenta occasionally green/blue
Bate-smith and Metcalf Test
Immediate red = presence of chalcones & aurones
if no color is produced, boil sample;
Intense (+) red/violet = leucoanthocyanins
Test for Anthocyanins
Extract with 1% HCl then boil
(+) at boiling point, an orange red to blue red coloration
