Concentration
The 'amount' of a substance per 'amount' of containing material (such as air, water, or soil), serving as a key determinant of chemical fate, transport, and treatment in environmental systems.
Molecular Weight (MW)
The sum of the atomic weights of all atoms in a chemical formula (Molecular weight=∑Atomic weights), used to convert between mass in grams and amount in moles (Mass in grams=Molecular weight×Number of moles).

Element Tile Layout
A standard periodic table box entry displaying the element name (e.g., Hydrogen), atomic weight (1.0080), chemical symbol (H), and atomic number (1).
Incompressible Liquid
A fluid property assumed for liquid water in all environmental engineering applications, meaning its volume and density do not significantly change under applied pressure.
Parts Per Million (ppmm)
A mass chemical per total mass unit defined as 1mg of solute per 1kg total mass (1mg/kg), or 1g of chemical per 106g total mass.
Parts Per Billion (ppb)
A concentration unit representing 1g of chemical per billion (109) grams total, equal to 1μg/kg in solid matrices or 1μg/L in aqueous solution.
Parts Per Trillion (ppt)
A mass-based concentration unit representing 1g of chemical per trillion (1012) grams of total mixture.
Aqueous 1ppm Equivalence
In dilute aqueous solutions, 1ppm is equal to 1mg/L because the density of water is approximately 1000g/L.
Molarity (M)
A concentration unit defined as the number of moles of a chemical compound dissolved per liter of solution (moles/L).
Trichloroethylene (TCE)
An environmental chemical contaminant with a molecular weight of 131.5g/mol.
Density
A physical property of matter defined as mass per unit volume (Density=VolumeMass), determining buoyancy in heterogeneous mixtures.

Molar Concentration of Pure Water
The molarity of pure water calculated by dividing its density (997g/L) by its molecular weight (18.0g/mol), giving 55.4mol/L.
Atomic Weight of Chlorine (Cl)
The standard atomic weight for chlorine used in environmental calculations, equal to 35.45g/mol.
Atomic Weight of Carbon (C)
The standard atomic weight for carbon, equal to 12g/mol (with 14 representing its radioactive isotope form).
