Part B IDEA
An IEP must be designed to include special education and related service to all students age 3 to 21 years if it determined by the educational team
OT process
Referral can be made by anyone (parents, teachers, etc)
Eval to determine eligibility, it’s a collaborative effort (multidisciplinary team)
Within 30 days the team has to make an IEP plan, get parental consent and start services
Services must follow IEP plan
IEP is reviewed once a year and reevaluated once every 3 years unless requested sooner
Evaluation
Occupational profile
Observe academic and non-academic tasks
Assessments (top down/ occupation based)
Interview (w/ teacher about expectations and parents about priorities)
Discuss results with parents before IEP meeting
IEP Plan
School-age children who receive special education services must have a written IEP. It includes:
Levels of performance
Goals and objectives
Beginning and ending dates
Frequency
Location
Duration
Type of services (ex: direct vs indirect)
Transition planning
Begin transition when the child turns 14 years old
Goals may include: ind living and working in the community or going to college
Termination of services
Services are no longer educationally relevant
Goals have been met
Therapy is contraindicated
Parents decline ongoing services
Numerous failed approaches and lengthy attempts
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
Broader and includes any student with a physical or mental impairment
RtI - Response to Intervention
The overall purpose is prevention
We identify and address student problems early to reduce the need for more intensive services later
