Front of the Brain (Hand Model)
The anterior part of the brain, represented by the pinkie fingers in the hand model.
Back of the Brain (Hand Model)
The posterior part of the brain, represented by the thumb knuckles in the hand model.
Hemispheres
The two halves of the brain (left and right), represented by the left and right hands in the hand model.
Cortex
The outer layer of the brain composed of a thin sheet of nerve cells that wraps around subcortical structures, modeled by fingers wrapped around the thumbs.
Subcortical Structures
Structures underneath the cortex that are continuous with the spinal cord, represented by the thumbs and arms in the hand model.
Gyrus
A bulge on the surface of the brain where the cortex folds outward, represented by the raised fingers in the hand model.
Sulcus
A crevice or fold in the brain between gyri, represented by the places where the fingers meet in the hand model.
Corpus Callosum
A large band of nerve cells that runs across and connects the left and right hemispheres, represented by pressed fingernails in the hand model.
Central Sulcus
The crevice that divides the frontal lobe and parietal lobe, represented in the hand model by the space between the ring finger and middle finger.
Frontal Lobe
The lobe located in the front of the brain, represented by the pinky and ring fingers in the hand model.
Parietal Lobe
The lobe located behind the frontal lobe, represented by the middle and index fingers in the hand model.
Temporal Lobes
The lobes located on the sides of the brain, represented by the knuckles of the index and middle fingers in the hand model.
Occipital Lobes
The lobes located in the back of the brain, represented by the space over the thumb knuckles in the hand model.
Primary Motor Area
The gyrus directly in front of the central sulcus (ring finger) that moves different parts of the body according to a organized map running from feet at the top down to the mouth at the bottom.
Primary Somatosensory Area
The gyrus directly behind the central sulcus (middle finger) that processes touch sensations from different body parts along an organized spatial map.
Precentral Gyrus
The motor gyrus located anterior to the central sulcus on the frontal lobe.
Postcentral Gyrus
The sensory gyrus located posterior to the central sulcus on the parietal lobe.
Longitudinal Fissure
The deep groove separating the left and right cerebral hemispheres along the midline.
Brain Stem
The region at the base of the brain comprising the pons and medulla that connects the brain to the spinal cord.
