LCD
The Least Common Denominator used to eliminate fractions in an equation, such as "x+3" in the provided example.
Restricted value
A value that must be cancelled out or not accepted because plugging it back into the equation would result in an undefined equation.
Undefined equation
An equation state that mathematicians avoid, often caused by plugging a restricted value back into the original expression.
Parenthesis
Notation used to ensure a multiplier, such as "−2", is applied to everything in an expression rather than just the first term.
Distribute
The mathematical step taken after fractions are removed where a value is multiplied across terms within parentheses.
Factoring
The process of breaking down an expression, like "y2−y+3y−3", into products such as "(y−1)(y+3)".
Replacing terms
The process of substituting the middle term of a quadratic (e.g., "2y") with two other terms (e.g., "−y+3y") to enable further factoring.
