Why is water polar?
Because the hydrogens have a partial positive charge and the oxygens have a partial negative charge due to the unequal sharing of electrons.
What is cohesion?
The attraction of the same molecules sticking together, Ex. water sticking together to form bigger drops of water
What is adhesion?
The attraction between different types of molecules, Ex. water sticking to a window
What is H bonding?
When a hydrogen atom and another atom has a high affinity for electrons
What is capillary action?
The ability of water to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of external forces, Ex. when water moves up a thin tube
What is surface tension?
The property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force
Why does water have a high heat capacity?
Because you have to break the hydrogen bond first before you can even raise the water temperature
Why do polar molecules dissolve in water?
Because water is also polar and like dissolves like meaning polar things dissolve polar things.
What are some polar solvents?
Water, milk, acetone, and alcohol
What are some non-polar solvents?
Oil, gasoline, hexane, and benzene
Non-polar solute that can dissolve in non-polar solvents?
Iodine
What is a solute?
The substance being dissolved
What is a solvent?
The substance doing the dissolving
What is a solution?
A mixture formed when the solute dissolves in the solvent
