At-will employment
A type of employment where either the employer or employee can terminate the employment at any time without cause.
Equal employment opportunity
The policy of providing equal opportunities for employment without discrimination in various categories.
Probationary period
A temporary period during which a newly hired employee is evaluated for suitability for the job, lasting six months.
Human Resources (HR) Section
The department responsible for managing recruitment, employee orientation, benefits, and personnel records.
Job analysis
A detailed process used to study a job's duties, tasks, and responsibilities in order to classify and compensate the position.
AWOL
Absent Without Leave; a classification for an employee who does not report for scheduled work and fails to notify their supervisor.
FMLA
Family and Medical Leave Act; a law that allows eligible employees to take unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons.
Sick leave
Paid time away from work due to illness or medical appointments.
Hazardous Duty Pay
Additional compensation for employees in certain positions that involve a higher risk or danger, typically paid monthly.
Performance evaluation
A systematic process of assessing an employee's job performance against predetermined standards.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
A program that provides counseling and assistance for employees facing personal issues that may affect their job performance.
Kronos Time Accounting System
A timekeeping system used by DeKalb County to track employee work hours, leave, and payroll.
Termination
The end of an employee's duration with the organization, either by resignation, dismissal, or retirement.
Leave without pay (LWOP)
A period during which an employee is absent from work without compensation.
Direct deposit
An electronic transfer of an employee's paycheck directly into their bank account.
Donated leave
Leave time that employees can contribute to help another employee who is facing medical issues.
Medical records confidentiality
The principle of keeping an employee's medical information private and secure.
On-the-job injury
An injury that occurs while an employee is performing their regular assigned duties.
Sabbatical leave
An extended leave granted to an employee, usually for research, rest, or study.
