First Aid

The immediate care given to the victim of injury or sudden illness to sustain life, prevent death, prevent permanent disability, and reduce the time needed for recovery.

Shock

The response of the cardiovascular system to the presence of adrenaline, resulting in capillary constriction, inadequate circulation of blood to body tissues, lowered blood pressure, and decreased kidney function.

Hemorrhage

Excessive bleeding.

Anaphylactic Shock

The response of the body to an allergen such as a medication or an insect bite or sting.

Consciousness

The state of being alert and aware.

EpiPen

A preloaded pen filled with epinephrine that serves as the first line of defense for anaphylactic shock if readily available.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Shock

Pale and clammy skin, weakness, restlessness, rapid pulse and respiratory rate, and possible vomiting.

Late Signs of Shock

Apathy, unresponsiveness, dilated pupils, mottled skin, and loss of consciousness.

Seizure

Uncontrolled muscle activity that can be caused by high body temperature, head injuries, drugs, and epilepsy.

Postictal Phase

The period after a seizure during which the patient can be confused, complain of a headache, and be exhausted.

Ingestion

The taking in of a substance by eating or drinking.

Emesis

Vomiting.

Open Wound

Any break in the skin, whether from injury or a surgical incision.
