Empirical Investigation
A method of research that relies on observation and experimentation to gather data and draw conclusions, emphasizing the importance of evidence in psychological studies.
Naturalistic observation
is a research method involving observing subjects in their natural environment without manipulation, aiming to gather data on behavior in real-world settings.
Longitudinal Study
A research design that involves repeated observations of the same variables over long periods, often years or decades, to identify patterns and changes in subjects.
Cross-sectional study
A research design that analyzes data from a population at one specific point in time, allowing comparisons across different groups.
Cohort Sequential Study
A research method that combines elements of both longitudinal and cross-sectional studies by following different groups (cohorts) over time, allowing for analysis of changes within and across cohorts.
Malfeasance
Unlawful or unethical behavior, especially by a public official, often involving corruption or wrongdoing.
Lateral Hypothalamus
A region of the brain associated with hunger and the regulation of feeding behavior.
Ventromedial Hypothalamus
A region of the brain involved in satiety and regulating food intake, helping signal when to stop eating.
Sympathetic NS
Part of the autonomic nervous system that prepares the body for 'fight or flight' responses, increasing heart rate and blood flow to muscles.
Parasympathetic nervous system
A division of the autonomic nervous system responsible for 'rest and digest' functions, promoting relaxation and conservation of energy.
EEG scan
Checks brain waves, brain activity, stroke/epilepsy, not very accurate
CT scan
Layers of 2D xrays to make 3D image
PET Scan
Brain activity shown through radioactive glucose consumption
MRI/fMRI
Magnetic; field provides image of atom concentration. Comparing multiple MRIs is fMRI.
