Ipratropium Bromide
An anticholinergic medication used to cause bronchodilation and decrease bronchial secretions.
Mechanism of Action
Causes bronchodilation by competitive inhibition of cholinergic receptors on bronchial smooth muscle and blocking acetylcholine.
Indications
Conditions such as bronchial asthma and bronchospasm associated with COPD.
Contraindications
Includes known hypersensitivity, acute treatment needs, ischemic chest pain, and acute narrow angle glaucoma.
Adult Dose
250-500 mcg mixed with Ventolin or 2-4 puffs, administered q 20 minutes up to 3 times.
Pediatric Dose
125-250 mcg mixed with Ventolin or NS, nebulized q 20 minutes up to 3 times for children under 12 years.
Side Effects
Palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, headache, nervousness, rash, nausea, vomiting.
Precautions
Considerations for patients with narrow angle glaucoma, BPH, and bladder-neck obstruction.
