The protection of our inherent differences and control the effects of faction.

Various and unequal distribution of property (rich vs. poor)

Removing its causes/banning factions-- but removing liberty hurts government and political life and it is impossible and immoral to remove personal differences (requires everyone to think the same way)

Republican government (elected leaders) -- ensures small factions cannot be widespread, just contained, rights are better protected in a large national government, don't give everyone the right to vote

The differences lie in that a republic's power lies in a small number of representatives elected by the whole, meaning it can be instituted over a greater amount of people and democracy's power lies in everyone voting on every issue (larger populations have more power)
How does a republic inhibit the effects of factions, according to Madison?
There is enough representation to provide various opinions, but not so many as to cause chaos and confusion (dilutes factions)
