What is the function of the endocrine system?
regulate cell/organ activity within body & control vital physiological processes in body, e.g. f/f response
Release hormones from glands into blood stream which then bind to specific receptors to regulate activity of cells/organs in the body and infl beh/mood
An imbalance in these hormones can stead to dysfunction
what are the function of glands into blood stream endocrine system
Pituitary gland: controls release of hormones from all other glands, e.g., it produces adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) which is involved in the stress response by stimul the prod + release of cortisol from adrenal glands
Thyroid gland: produces thyroxine which aids heart and digestive functioning, metabolism, brain development, bone health and muscle control
Adrenal gland: produces adrenaline which triggers the f/f resp e.g., raises heart rate, breathing rate
