biological species concept
Species are groups that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring (doesn’t apply to fossils or asexual organisms).
Morphological species concept –
Species are defined by physical traits (useful for fossils but can be subjective).
Phylogenetic species concept
– Identifies species based on unique evolutionary history and DNA (may over-split species and relies on genetic data, which isn’t always available, and horizontal gene transfer).
Cohesion species concept
Defines species based on genetic and ecological continuity (difficult to test and measure in many organisms).
