What is binary fision?
Process by which prokaryotic organisms like bacteria divide and reproduce
Why is binary fission not the same as mitosis or meiosis?
Because mitosis and meiosis happen in eukaryotic cells and binary fission happens in prokaryotic cells
How does bacteria multiply?
By binary fission
Before bacterial cell can divide what things does it need to do?
Grow - so it’s big enough too give rise of 2 new cells
Next it has to replicate genetic material ( circular strand of DNa and plasmid )so there’s enough for new cell
What is the process of binary fission?
1- The circular DNA and plasmid replicate
2-The cell gets bigger and the circular DNA strands move to opposite poles(ends) of the cell so the offspring cells will get one each
3) The plasmids are arranged randomly, so one offspring cells may end up getting more than other
4)The cytoplasm begins to divide and new cell wall begins to form
5)when complete allows 2 halves to pull up apart creating two new bacterial cells
How quickly can bacterial populations grow?
Bc binary fission is a simple process it doesn’t take much time meaning some bacteria(e.g. coli ) can divide once every 20 minutes given right conditions
What does the mean division( time )depend on?
Species and the condition bacteria is in
What condition is good for optimal bacteria growth?
Warm moist plenty of nutrients
Practice question
A bacterial cell has a mean division of 30 minutes how many cells would it produce after 3 hours?
First work out how many division cycles there are in 3 hours- do 3hrs=180 minutes divided by 30 =6
Then work out how many cells it would make- by taking original cell which is 1 and multiplying it by 2 six times
1×2×2×2×2×2×2= 64
So 64 cells are produced after 3 hours
what happens if conditions of bacteria bevcome unfavourable?
The cells will stop dividing and eventually begin to die
