Thoracic Cavity

Has heart + lungs + other → superior to diaphram

Mediastinum

central part of thoracic cavity → has heart + aorta + thymus gland + chest portion of the trachea + esophagus + lymph nodes and important nerves

Abdominal Pelvic Cavity

Abdominal + Pelvic Cavities→ inferior to diaphram

Abdominal Cavity

least protected cavity → has stomach, liver, & other organs → Protected by trunk muscles

Pelvic Cavity

reproductive organs, bladder, & rectum → Protected somewhat by pelvis

Serosa/Serous Membrane

double membrane made of 2 parts: Parietal serosa + Visceral serosa

Parietal Serosa

membrane lining cavity walls

Visceral serosa

Parietal folds on itself, covering the organs in the cavity

Serous fluid

thin layer of lubricating fluid secreted by both membranes

Allows organs to slide without friction across the cavity walls, especially with heart & stomach
