Argument Analysis and Conflict Resolution Vocabulary

A set of vocabulary flashcards defining key terms related to conflict, reasoning, and evidentiary support as outlined in the lecture notes.

Stakeholder

A specific person or group of people that have something to WIN or LOSE from a conflict

Conflict/Problem

A situation in which there is a disagreement between multiple parties with competing wants or needs. This can scale from small daily disagreements to massive policy debates or even wars

Context

The external factors (such as history, geography, author background, or other factors) that provide greater meaning to a conflict or conversation

Bias

The conscious or unconscious preference of a person or group that causes them to select and/or present information that agrees with their point of view

Evidence

The specific proof provided to support a claim or idea - for instance: a quote, a statistic, a historical precedent, etc.

Claim

A statement that is presented as truth or fact, which can be analyzed or debated to measure its accuracy.

Line of Reasoning

The order in which an author presents, analyzes, and strengthens an argument by connecting different claims and pieces of evidence together.

Subclaim

A smaller statement that is presented as a fact in order to support a larger and more central claim.

Solution

A specific response to a conflict or problem that settles a disagreement, or directly responds to the wants/needs of an individual or group.
