Torsion Bar
A straight bar that acts as a lateral spring by twisting along its length rather than acting as a coil, helping support vehicle weight and maintain correct ride height.
Elasticity of the Rod
The property that allows the torsion bar to untwist and return its natural tendency back to its neutral position, returning the lower control arm to its normal position.
Front Suspension Mounting
A mounting location where one end of the torsion bar connects to the lower control arm and the other connects to the adjustment nut and cross member, allowing room for front axle components in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Rear Suspension Mounting
A mounting location for torsion bars used to conserve room needed for larger components, such as in rear-wheel-drive vehicles with a rear engine and transmission assembly.
Front-to-Rear Configuration
A configuration that uses one torsion bar for each side of the front suspension to provide an independent front suspension and allow space for front axle components.
Side-to-Side Configuration
A complex configuration that uses two torsion bars contained inside a tube, with one connected to the top of the steering knuckle and the other connected to the bottom.
Locating Block
A block that connects two torsion bars to the middle of a tube in a side-to-side configuration, creating a bar assembly split into a left section and a right section.
Steering Knuckle
A suspension component in a side-to-side configuration that connects to a top torsion bar and a bottom torsion bar.
