the scientific study of human behavior in orginizations and work place.

I/O is a scientific displine, whereas HR is more of a managment function
I/O is more employee facing, whereas HR is organization facing

What are themes in I/O psych?
Good Work! Work that is meangiful and promotes positive work! Contributes to society and connects to positive psychology
I/O psych was born out of the industrial revolution
this is when it went from farm workers to factory workers, though it was chaotic.
The focus was on increasing productivity
The term of i/o psych did not exist quite yet, but some called it ‘economic psych’
Who was William Wundt?
He founded one of the first psychological labs in 1876 in Germany
First person to differ between phil and ‘med’
took a more experimental apporach
intrested in general laws
sensations and reactions
coined indivdual differences as error
Two of the most famous I/O Psychs studided under him (Hugo Münsterberg and James McKeen Cattell
Who was Hugo Münsterberg?
He would leave Germany in 1892
He ended up being the director of psych labs at Harvard
he thought that there was no value in applying psych to work
Later, researched Industry effencity and pushed for I/O, thought it would lead for economic development!
He would be one of the first people to measure abilities in workers (such as efficacy) and tie them to performance.
