Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Test

Used to assess how well the lungs deliver oxygen to the blood, remove carbon dioxide, and regulate pH levels by drawing blood from a artery using a heparinized (anticoagulant) syringe with a self-sealing filter cap.

Measures: pH, PaO2, PaCO2, HCO3^-, and SaO2

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

To evaluate how efficiently the body processes glucose after a measured amount of sugar is ingested, used to diagnose various types of diabetes.

Patient intakes a glucose solution in 5 minutes, and collector performs one or more timed blood draws to monitor body’s response. Patient is required to fast 8-10 hours prior.

Alcohol (ETOH) Test

Used to determine the concentration of alcohol in a person’s system.

Use chlorohexidine or povidone-iodine wipe instead of alcohol wipes.

May either be serum or plasma. Use a glass grey-top tube containing sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate additives.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

Substance derived from a person’s own blood that contains a concentrated mixture of platelets and growth factors.

Small blood sample is drawn from the patient, centrifuged, aliquoted, and inserted back into patient’s injured tissue area. Uses anticoagulants and remains in liquid form.

Used both in medical and cosmetic treatments.

Intentionally removing a large volume of blood from patient to reduce blood volume or adjust concentration of specific components.

Hemochromatosis is a disorder where body absorbs and stores too much iron. Removing blood encourages body to use iron already stored instead.
