What is the main definition of sin?
Rejection of or wrong against God.
What is a secondary definition of sin?
A wrong against reason, truth, and right conscience.
What is the main cause of sin?
A failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by inordinate attachment to certain goods.
What are the forms of sin?
A word, action, or desire contrary to the eternal law.
Where do we see sin generally?
Attitude, action (sin of commission), failure to act (sin of omission), and abuse of power.
Give examples of social sins prevalent in society
Everyday actions, widespread dishonesty, hate and prejudice, greed, excessive consumerism and violence.
What does sin separate us from?
God (truth, goodness, beauty), ourselves (hardens hearts, weakens intellects, enslaves wills), and one another (jealousy, mistrust).
What are the consequences of mortal sin?
Death of true love and charity in our hearts and loss of sanctifying grace.
What is personal sin?
Sin committed by an individual that is his or her own responsibility (culpability).
What is social sin?
A cycle of sin, violence, and injustice caused by individual sin, often leading to structures of sin in society.
What three conditions must be met for a sin to be considered mortal?
Grave matter, full knowledge, and complete consent.
What are the effects of mortal sin?
Loss of charity/true love, loss of sanctifying grace, and loss of friendship with God.
How does venial sins impact us?
Damages/weakens our relationship with God
What is the definition of social sin?
A cycle of sin, violence, and injustice caused by individual sin, often leading to structures of sin in society.
What are the classifications of injustice from the reading 'Left to Tell'?
Discrimination, dehumanization, and extermination.
What are the steps in the spiral of violence?
Basic injustice, violent response, violent counter response, escalating violence, and violence ends temporarily.
How do we contribute to structures of sin?
Cause, support, or utilize evil; fail to avoid, eliminate, or limit certain social evils; giving excuses.
What offers forgiveness when we fail?
Jesus

Where is our relationship with God restored?
Sacrament of Reconciliation
What does God provide in the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
His grace, God’s divine life inside of us, which wipes away our sins in the ocean of his mercy.
What are we called to in terms of our relationship with God?
Continual personal conversion
How can we follow Christ and address social sins?
Pray, hope, work, and love.
