Scotland

The portion of the United Kingdom that occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It is bounded by England in the south and on the other three sides by water: by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and north and by the North Sea on the east.

2
New cards

The British Isles

A geographical term that encompasses Great Britain, the island of Ireland, and several other smaller islands, such as the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is not a part of the United Kingdom or the European Union, even though its Lord is the Monarch of the United Kingdom.

3
New cards

The Commonwealth Realm

A voluntary association of countries that were formerly British colonies. Its members recognise the United Kingdom Monarch as their own king or queen, but remain politically independent.

4
New cards

England

The largest and most populous portion of the UK. It is bounded by Wales and the Irish Sea on the west and Scotland on the north.

5
New cards

The Crown

The state in all its aspects within the jurisprudence of the Commonwealth realms and their subdivisions, such as Crown dependencies, overseas territories, provinces, or states. The term is also used to designate the monarch in either a personal capacity, as Head of the Commonwealth, or as the king or queen of his or her realms.

6
New cards

Great Britain

An island that consists of the three somewhat autonomous regions of England, Scotland, and Wales. It is located east of Ireland and northwest of France in the Atlantic Ocean

7
New cards

Northern Ireland

A division of the United Kingdom in the northeast section of the island of Ireland.

8
New cards

The Irish Republic

This country is also called Eire in Gaelic. As it is a different country, it does NOT belong to the British Crown. It occupies all but the north-eastern corner of the island of Ireland in the British Isles.

9
New cards

The Crown Dependencies

Three island territories off the coast of Great Britain that are self-governing possessions of The Crown: the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Isle of Man. They do not form part of either the United Kingdom, the British Overseas Territories or the Commonwealth of Nations. Internationally, they are considered "territories for which the United Kingdom is responsible", rather than sovereign states

10
New cards

The United Kingdom

A country that includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

11
New cards

British Overseas Territories

Fourteen mostly self-governing territories which have the British monarch as head of state. They are remnants of the British Empire and do not form part of the United Kingdom itself, though it does retain responsibility for their defence and foreign relations.

12
New cards

Wales

This part of the United Kingdom lies west of England and is separated from England by the Cambrian Mountains. It is bordered on the northwest, west, and south by the Irish Sea and on the northeast and east by England.
