Insomnia
A sleep disorder characterized by an inability to initiate sleep or the inability to stay asleep.
Somnambulism
Sleepwalking that occurs during stages 3 and 4 of sleep.
Somniloquy
Sleep talking that occurs during stages 3 and 4 of sleep.
Sleep Apnea
A disorder in which an individual stops breathing during sleep.
Nightmares
Frightening dreams that occur during REM sleep and can be vividly recalled.
NREM Sleep
Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep, includes stages 1, 2, 3, and 4.
REM Sleep
Rapid Eye Movement sleep, where dreaming occurs and brain activity resembles that of wakefulness.
Restorative Sleep Theory
The theory that suggests sleep allows for repair and revitalization of the body and brain.
Preservation and Protection Theory of Sleep
The theory that sleep serves to protect individuals from danger and minimize energy expenditure.
Sleep Cycle
The pattern of sleep stages that is repeated approximately every 90 minutes during a night of sleep.
Transient Sleep Problems
Temporary sleep issues often resulting from external stressors.
Sleep Paralysis
A condition characterized by the inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up.
Sleep Terror
A sleep disorder characterized by episodes of intense fear during sleep, often with a scream but a lack of memory of the event.
Nightmares vs. Night Terrors
Nightmares are bad dreams occurring during REM sleep, while night terrors occur during NREM sleep without memory of the event.
