brisk passive extension (stretching the quad by tapping its tendon)

What happens immediately after an SCI
- bleeding into the injured area leads to swelling, which compresses and damages axons
- release of free radicals break up cell membranes
- macrophages invade the damaged site
- astrocytes form scar tissue
What happens in spinal shock phase
cord functions below lesion are lost
- reflexes: areflexia (at and below the level of injury)
- muscle tone: hypotonic (less muscle stiffness)
What happens weeks or months after SCI
- sensory, motor & autonomic impairment below the level of the lesion
- below the level of injury, muscle tone and reflexes become hyperactive
2 types of SCI:
Complete
Incomplete
What is a complete SCI
absense of sensory and motor function below the level of the lesion
What is an incomplete SCI
partial preservation of sensory and/or motor function below the lesion
SCI segmental function
interferes with function only AT the level of the lesion
SCI vertical tract function
results in the loss of function BELOW the level of the lesion
