Learning
The process of acquiring new information or modifying existing behavior through studying, practicing, and gaining experience.
Memory Formation
The ability to store information and retrieve it as needed; involves processes like encoding, consolidation, and retrieval.
Hippocampus
A brain region crucial for memory formation, especially in forming new memories after experiences.
Sensory Buffers
The briefest stage of memory that stores sensory impressions; includes iconic memory for visual stimuli.
Short-Term Memory (STM)
A type of memory that lasts up to 30 seconds without rehearsal and is capable of holding information temporarily.
Working Memory (WM)
A type of short-term memory used for temporary storage; involved in tasks like mental math or remembering directions.
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
Memory that can last from days to a lifetime, with a large capacity and consisting of different types.
Declarative Memory
Also known as explicit memory, it involves information that can be verbally described, like facts or events.
Nondeclarative Memory
Also known as implicit memory, it involves skills and tasks that are performed rather than verbally described, such as riding a bike.
Amnesia
A severe impairment of memory, which can be retrograde (difficulty retrieving old memories) or anterograde (difficulty forming new memories).
Korsakoff's Syndrome
A memory disorder caused by vitamin B1 deficiency, often associated with alcohol addiction, leading to memory loss and confabulation.
Dementia
A group of conditions characterized by the impairment of memory, judgment, and other cognitive functions; Alzheimer’s disease is the most severe type.
