What is eDNA?
A DNA ‘signature’ left in the environment by all living organisms.
What is eDNA useful for?
Can be used to detect species & characterise ecological communities.
What is a DNA barcode?
A short region of DNA within the genome whose sequence varies characteristically between species and can be used for identification.
What are the steps to eDNA processing
Environmental sample
DNA extraction
DNA amplification
Sequencing
Data analysis
Reference database
Taxonomy assignment
Output (single species or multiple species)
What is DNA amplification?
DNA barcode areas are amplified using polymerase chain reaction: a process to detect & replicate DNA barcode areas.
What are PCR primers?
Short piece of synthetic DNA that match & ‘mark’ each end of the barcode region, tells our PCR which piece of DNA we want to amplify.
What are the uses of eDNA for single species detection?
Endangered species
Invasive species/biosecurity
Pathogens
