Polite Expressions
Expressions that show good manners and respect for other people, such as "I am sorry," "Please," and "Thank you."
Sequencing Events
Arranging the events as they happened in a story.
Non-sentences
Groups of words with no complete thought.
Sentences
Groups of words that express complete ideas or thoughts, starting with a capital letter and ending with a punctuation mark.
Cause
Tells why something happens.
Effect
Tells what happens after a cause.
Telling Sentence
A sentence that tells about something, starting with a capital letter and ending with a period (.).
Asking Sentence
A sentence that asks a question, starting with a capital letter and ending with a question mark (?).
Who
A question word that asks for the name of a person or persons.
What
A question word that asks for the name of a thing, a place, an animal, or an event.
Where
A question word that asks for the name of a place.
When
A question word that asks for the date and time.
Why
A question word that asks for a reason.
How
A question word that asks about the way something is done.
Noun
A word that names a person, place, thing, animal, or event.
Common Nouns
Refer to general names of people, places, things, animals, or events.
Proper Nouns
Refer to particular names of people, places, things, animals, or events, and are written with a capital letter.
Sentences that give commands
Sentences that tell someone to do something.
Sentences that express requests
Commands that are pleasant to hear because polite words (e.g., Please, Kindly, May I) are used.
Verb
A word that shows action in a sentence, such as 'bakes,' 'drives,' or 'tells.'
