Respiratory System Function
Supplying oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide through cellular respiration.
Breathing
Physical process of inhalation and exhalation.
Gaseous Exchange
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the process of diffusion.
Cellular Respiration
Process whereby glucose is broken down inside the cells by oxygen; releases energy and produces carbon dioxide and water.
Nose and Mouth
Outer openings to allow air to flow through.
Nostrils
Leads to nasal cavities.
Trachea (windpipe)
Tube that enters the chest.
Cricoid cartilage
What keeps the trenches open

Two smaller tubes that the trachea branches into, which enter the lungs.
Bronchioles
Smaller tubes that the bronchi branch into.
Infundibulum
Small lung sac at the end of a bronchiole.
Lungs
Main organ of the respiratory system; two spongy, elastic organs in the chest cavity.
Diaphragm
Dome-shaped muscular partition below the lungs.
Diaphragm
Most important muscle used for breathing.
Asthma
Condition caused by allergies, leading to narrowed airways.
Lung Cancer
Cells in lungs grow out of control and form tumors.
Bronchitis
Swelling of the lining of the bronchi due to infection.
Bronchitis Symptoms
Airways become congested with mucus.
Tuberculosis (TB)
Condition caused by bacteria; contagious and breaks down lung tissue.
