Geography
The science that studies the relationships among geographic areas, natural systems, society, cultural activities, and the interdependence of all these through space.
Spatial
Refers to the nature and character of physical space and the distribution of things within it.
Physical Geography
The subfield of geography that focuses on Earth's natural features and processes.
Human Geography
The subfield of geography that examines the spatial organization and distribution of human activities and their relationship with the environment.
Geomorphology
The study of landforms and how the interactions of Earth's processes and surface materials contribute to landform development and modification.
Biogeography
The study of plant and animal distributions of the present and past, including geographic ranges, distribution patterns, and assemblages of species, and how they may change in the future.
Temporal Scale
A specification of either the rate at which time passes, points in time, or both.
Regions
Areas identified by specific characteristics (physical, human, or a combination) that make them distinctive and separate them from other areas.
Regional Geography
The branch of geography that emphasizes the study of the characteristics of a region or of multiple regions.
Geovisualization
The use of visual tools—such as maps, interactive visualizations, and 3D representations of terrain—to represent and analyze spatial data.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
A geographic technology used for location, tracking, mapping, and timing.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
A technology used for mapping, spatial analysis, and decision-making support by layering spatial data.
Remote Sensing
The collection of data about Earth's surface from a distance using sensors and instruments on satellites or aircraft, used for environmental monitoring, disaster management, resource management, and urban planning.
Scientific Theory
A broad explanation supported by repeated experiments, evidence, and reasoning that explains why something happens, and may include multiple laws.
Scientific Law
A concise statement or mathematical formula based on consistent observations and data that describes what happens.
System
A group of interacting and interdependent units that together form an organized whole.
Earth System
A set of interrelated components, variables, processes, and subsystems (such as the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere) that interact and function together to make up Earth.
Subsystem
A separate system operating within the boundaries of a larger system, such as the Earth system.
Atmosphere
The blanket of air, composed of various gases, that envelops Earth.
Lithosphere
A general term for the solid (rock) part of the Earth system.
Hydrosphere
The major Earth subsystem consisting of the waters of Earth, including oceans, ice, freshwater bodies, groundwater, and water within the atmosphere and biomass.
Biosphere
The life forms—human, animal, or plant—of Earth that form one of the major Earth subsystems.
Spatial Distribution
The arrangement or placement of features where they are located (or absent) on Earth's surface.
Spatial Pattern
The geometric or linear arrangement of features across space.
Spatial Interaction
A condition, occurrence, or process in one place that impacts another place across space.
Environment
Our surroundings, including both natural physical conditions (air, water, soil, climate, landforms, flora, fauna) and human-made components (cities, infrastructure, technology) that affect the development of organisms.
Ecology
The science that studies the interactions between organisms and their environment.
Ecosystem
A community of organisms functioning together through interdependent relationships with the environment that they occupy.
Arable Land
Land classified as suitable for annual crop production, comprising about 10–11% of the world's land area (approximately 3–3.5% of Earth's surface).
Anthropocene
The most recent epoch of geologic history during which human activity has been the dominant influence on Earth's climate and ecosystems.
Natural Hazard
Any natural process that puts human life or property at risk of damage.
Environmental Sustainability
The responsible use and management of natural resources in ways that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Nonrenewable Natural Resources
Materials from the Earth, such as fossil fuels and minerals, that exist in limited amounts and cannot be replaced within a human lifetime once used.
Environmental Overshoot
A situation where the rate of resource use is unsustainable relative to the existing supply or rate of renewability of that resource.
Systems Analysis
The method of determining the parts of a system, the processes involved, and studying how changes in interactions among those parts and processes affect the system and its operation.
Open System
A system in which inputs and outputs of energy and materials can freely cross system boundaries.

Closed System
A system that is shut off from the surrounding environment so that no substantial amount of material can cross its boundaries.

Steady-State Equilibrium
A condition where a system fluctuates over time but remains centered on a fixed average because inputs and outputs are equal over time.
Dynamic Equilibrium
A condition where a system fluctuates around an average that gradually shifts over time, balancing around a moving condition.
Feedback Loop
A process in which the output of a system is fed back into the system as input, influencing future outputs.
