Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST)
A type of testing that helps us think in a very particular way
Applies in situations where we are faced with a question that is too complicated to know the answer with 100% certainty
What is the idea of NHST?
Simplify the problem by making an assumption about one part of it
Collect data and see if the data are inconsistent with our assumption
Why are we looking for inconsistency and NOT consistency?
Inconsistency is more powerful than consistency
If we observe consistency…?
it could mean our assumption is correct, but it could also be a coincidence
If we observe inconsistency…?
there is no way that our assumption could be correct
What is the goal?
Falsify the assumption we made at the beginning.
We tend to assume something “bad”, meaningless (null)
If we falsify the assumption, it thus implies that things are not bad/meaningless/null
