What is compartment syndrome?

What commonly causes compartment syndrome?
Commonly follows trauma or crush injury
Why is compartment syndrome dangerous?
Rising pressure can reduce blood flow and impair nerve function; can cause severe pain, weakness, and tissue damage
How can [acute] compartment syndrome be treated?
Fasciotomy to relieve pressure
What are shin splints?
Involves repetitive stress on tibialis anterior and the connective tissue covering the tibia (periosteum); produces pain and tenderness along the tibial border
How can shin splints develop?
Usually caused by repetitive overuse; common in runners and after sudden increases in activity
How can shin splints be improved?
Rest, activity modification, gradual return to normal activity
