Tumescent solution
A solution prepared by a surgical technologist specifically for use during a liposuction procedure.
Integumentary system
The body system that includes the dermis and epidermis.
Stratum lucidum
The epidermal stratum that is present only on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
Stratum corneum
The outermost layer of the epidermal strata.
Sebaceous glands
Oil-producing glands found within the skin.
Sebum
The specific name of the oil secreted from glands in the skin.
Ceruminous glands
Glands found only in the ear canal that are responsible for the creation of ear wax.
Third-degree burn
A burn classification where tissue appears pearly white or charred and typically requires the debridement of eschar.
Rule of nines
A clinical tool used in burn patients to estimate the total body surface area (BSA) burned.
Debridement
The process of removing necrotic tissue or eschar prior to performing a skin graft.
Apocrine glands
Glands located exclusively in the axillae and the external genitalia.
Mesh graft device
A tool used to expand the size of a skin graft.
Dermachalasis
The relaxation and hypertrophy of the skin of the eyelid.
Cheiloplasty and palatoplasty
Corrective surgical procedures performed to treat cleft lip and cleft palate.
Volar
Anatomical term used to describe the palmar surface of the hand.
Radial
Anatomical term used to describe the thumb side of the hand.
TRAM flap
A transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap used primarily for breast reconstruction.
Syndactyly
The medical term for the congenital condition of having webbed digits on the hand or foot.
Submalar augmentation
A procedure performed to address structural deficiencies in the cheeks.
Mentoplasty
A cosmetic procedure performed to correct micrognathia (small or recessed chin).
Mandibular symphysis
The anatomical term for the chin.
Tenotomy scissors
The type of scissors most commonly used to trim a full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) to the correct size.
Z-plasty
The incisional configuration most commonly utilized for scar revision procedures.
Mastopexy
The surgical procedure used to correct breast ptosis (sagging).
Rhytidectomy
The medical term for a full facelift; it requires protecting the seventh (VII) cranial nerve (facial nerve).
Arthrodesis
The surgical fixation of a joint intended to result in bone fusion.
Radial dysplasia
A congenital deformity more commonly referred to as "club hand."
Metacarpals
The specific bones that comprise the palm of the hand.
Median nerve
The nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel.
Doppler probe
A sterile device used during TRAM flap reconstruction to verify that the blood supply of the graft is intact.
Pedicle flap
A type of grafted tissue in which the skin sensation is preserved.
