Magna Carta
A document setting out people’s rights, which the barons made King John sign in 1215.
Democracy
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Freeman
A person who is not a slave or serf.
Great Council
An advisory body to the English king that evolved into Parliament.
King John
King of England who inherited financial struggles and made poor decisions, leading to the Magna Carta.
Baron's Revolt
Frustration with King John's rule led barons to gather an army and demand changes.
Runnymede
The location where King John met the barons in June 1215 and agreed to the Magna Carta.
Rule of Law
Established by the Magna Carta, meaning even the king must follow the law.
Habeas Corpus
A right guaranteed by the Magna Carta protecting against illegal imprisonment.
Provisions of Oxford
Accepted by Henry III in 1258 after barons rebelled, leading to the creation of Parliament.
