Matter
The amount of space something takes up in a given volume
Chemistry
Chemistry is the scientific study of matter—its composition, structure, properties, and the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.
Solid
Has definite shape and volume. Has particles that are packed closely together and usually arranged in a regular pattern
Liquid
Has a definite volume but no fixed shape. Has particles that can move and are in close contact.
Gas
Has no definite volume and shape. Has particles that are wildly spread
Plasma
Has no definite volume and shape. Has charged particles that are wildly separated
Pure Substance
A single kind of matter that has a specific make up and has a specific set of properties. Ex:Table salt
Physical Property
Can be observed without changing the identity of the substance. Ex: Color, shape, hardness, texture, mass, weight, volume
Chemical Property
When you change a chemical form into a completely different one
Atoms
Building blocks for matter
Element
A substance that can not be broken into any simpler substance
Compound
A substance made up of 2 or more elements chemically combined in exact ratio
Mixture
two or more substances combined but not chemically
Homogeneous
Appears to be the same Ex: Soda
Heterogeneous
least mixed - materials large enough to be seen Ex: Soil, muddy water
Colloid
Homogeneous mixture in which particles are mixed but not dissolved
