A type of cell division which creates genetically identical diploid cells.

In a body cell, which is any cell which doesn’t produce gametes.

What happens in interphase?

• Chromosomes start to become visible

• DNA is copied

What happens in prophase?

• Each chromosome consists of two chromatids

• The nuclear membrane breaks down

What happens in metaphase?

• Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell

What happens in anaphase?

• Chromatids separate

• One chromatid from each pair is pulled to each pole

• Chromatids can now be called chromosomes

What happens during telophase?

• Spindle fibers disappear

• A new nuclear membrane forms round each group of chromosomes

What happens during cytokinesis?

• The cell splits into two

What is mitosis used for?

• Growth

• Repair

• Asexual reproduction

After growth, what can cells do?

Differentiate into specialized cells. This happens differently in animal and plant cells.

What are cancer cells?

• Abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably by mitosis

• Cells usually stop dividing when growth has finished, except when repair is needed

• Sometimes the controls that tell cells when to stop dividing go wrong; this leads to cancer
