Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 Diabetes

A form of diabetes characterized by insulin resistance and insensitivity to insulin by the tissues, often associated with obesity and adult onset.

Gestational Diabetes

A form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and is similar to Type 2 diabetes, caused by pregnancy hormones.

Diagnosed Diabetes

Diabetes that has been officially diagnosed by a healthcare professional.

Undiagnosed Diabetes

Diabetes that has not been identified or diagnosed in an individual.

Blood Glucose Level

The amount of glucose (sugar) present in the bloodstream, which needs to be maintained within a certain range for optimal health.

Insulin

A hormone produced by the pancreas that allows cells to take in glucose from the bloodstream and use it for energy.

Pancreas

An organ located near the stomach that produces insulin and other important hormones involved in digestion and metabolism.

Glucagon

A hormone produced by the pancreas that increases blood sugar levels by stimulating the liver to release stored glucose.

Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbA1c)

A blood test that measures the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months, used to assess long-term blood sugar control in individuals with diabetes.

Glucose Tolerance Test

A test used to measure how well the body processes glucose, involving the consumption of a glucose drink followed by blood tests at regular intervals.
