What is the phlebotomy method based on?
the condition of the patient’s veins, age, skin conditions, and overall health. Overall method chosen should be the one that is most appropriate for each patient that has greatest chance for successful collection
Preferred vein withing antecubital space is which vein and why?
median cubital vein because it causes less pain and least likely to roll during procedure
Other strong vein alternatives?
cephalic and basilic veins
If the veins in anticubital space are inaccessible which areas are also optional
hand, wrist, and foot
What is the risk of preforming blood draws from the foot?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Most systems reccomended for healthy adults
evacuated needle system
When drawing from hand or small/thin veins
butterfly method
when drawing only a small amount of blood from a pt with limited options for draw site
needle syringe system
When a vein is highly visible but do not have a bounce to them they should be …
avoided because veins always have a bouncy feel
When applying the tourniquet it’ll impair blood flow which does what?
promote successful phlebotomy
Leaving tourniquet on longer than 1 min can cause hemoconcentration which is what?
An increase of formed elements of the blood and a decrease of fluid content
Check with patient regarding possible restrictions due to
fistulas, ports, or mastectomy which side with these conditions should be avoided for blood draw
Avoid sites with
scar tissue, injuries, burns, or wounds
With loss of venous sufficiency veins are..
prone to roll meaning the needle pushes the vein over then puncturing as intended
When veins lose elasticity they are
fragile and easily damaged by venipuncture
