Failing to remain at the scene of a collision
A driving offense that results in the immediate penalty of 7 demerit points.
Careless driving
A serious driving offense that carries a penalty of 6 demerit points.
Failing to stop for a school bus
An offense for which a driver receives 6 demerit points and a fine of up to \textdollar 1000.
Accompanying Driver (G1)
A fully licensed driver with at least 4 years of driving experience and a blood alcohol level of less than 0.05% who must sit in the front seat beside a G1 driver.
G1 Blood Alcohol Level
While operating a vehicle, a G1 driver must maintain a blood alcohol level of exactly 0.00%.
G1 Night Driving Restriction
A G1 driver is prohibited from driving between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m.
Knowledge Test Passing Score
A test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions (20 on signs, 20 on rules) where the driver must not score more than 4 incorrect answers in each section.
Blind Spots
Areas of the road that cannot be seen when looking forward or by using only the mirrors; these must be checked by looking over the shoulder.
Broken Yellow Line
A pavement marking that separates traffic going in opposite directions and indicates passing is permitted if the way is clear.
Solid Yellow Line
A pavement marking at the left of a lane indicating it is unsafe to pass and the line may not be crossed.
Two-Second Rule
A method used to determine a safe following distance by picking a fixed object and ensuring at least two seconds pass after the vehicle ahead passes it.
Hand-over-Hand Steering
The proper steering technique used in North America to maintain control and respond quickly during turns.
Single Flashing Yellow Light
A traffic signal indicating the driver has the right-of-way but should proceed with caution.
Ontario Right Turn on Red
The legal practice of turning right after coming to a complete stop and yielding to all traffic and pedestrians, unless a sign prohibits it.
Hydroplaning
A condition during heavy rain where tires ride up on a film of water; prevented by having good tread depth, proper inflation, and reducing speed.
School Bus Stop Rule
Drivers following or meeting a school bus with flashing red lights and a stop arm must stop at least 20 m away.
Streetcar Stop Rule
Where no safety zone exists, drivers must stop 2 m behind the rearmost door of a stopped streetcar discharging or taking on passengers.
City Speed Limit
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit in cities, towns, villages, and built-up areas is 50 km/h (30 m.p.h.).
Rural Highway Speed Limit
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit on highways outside of built-up areas is 80 km/h (50 m.p.h.).
Demerit Point Interview
An interview that may be required by the Ministry of Transportation once a driver accumulates 9 demerit points.
Demerit Point Suspension
The automatic suspension of a driver's licence for 30 days when 15 or more demerit points are accumulated.
Uphill Parking with a Curb
A parking technique where the front wheels must be turned all the way to the left.
Downhill Parking with a Curb
A parking technique where the front wheels must be turned all the way to the right.
Railway Crossing Stopping Distance
A driver must stop at least 5 m (15 ft) from the nearest rail when a signal warns of an approaching train.
Fire Hydrant Parking
The minimum legal distance a vehicle can be parked from a fire hydrant is 3 m (10 ft).
Class G Licence
A licence for any car, van, or small truck or combination of vehicle and towed vehicle up to 11,000 kg provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kg.
