Squama

thin plate like feature that rises almost verticaly to form the cranial walls and articulate with the parietals along the squamosal suture

Zygomatic process

(of the temporal) thin projection of bone that forms the posterior half of the zygomatic arch

Mandibular fossa (glenoid fossa)

lies posterosuperior to the articular eminence; eminence and fossa itself are bounded medially by the sphenosquamosal suture

External Acoustic meatus (EAM)

external opening of the ear canal

Styloid Process

thin pointed bony rod that points anteroinferiorly from the base of the temporal bone

Stylomastoid foramen

located immediately posterior to the base of the styloid process

Mastoid Process

bears an external rugose surface for the attachment of several muscles

Suprameatal crest

the superior root of the zygomatic process; runs horizontally above the external acoustic meatus where the osteometric point auriculare is located

Mastoid notch (digastric groove)

for attachment of the digastric muscle ; vertically oriented furrow medial to the mastoid process

Mastoid foramen

located near the posterior edge of the mastoid process along the occipitomastoid suture

Parietal Notch

formed by the posterosuperior border of the temporal where the squamosal and parietomastoid sutures meet

Petrous pyramid (endo)

the massive dense bony part that dominates the endocranial aspect of the temporal

Internal acoustic meatus (endo)

located about midway along the posterior surface of the petrous pyramid

Jugular fossa

located just medial to the base of the styloid process

Carotid canal (endo)

large circular canal; situated medial to the syloid process at the level of the sphenosquamosal suture, just anterior to the jugular fossa

Middle meningeal groove (endo)

narrow well defined channels which mark the endocranial surface of the temporal

sigmoid sulcus (endo)

large curving groove set at the posterior base of the petrous pyramid on the endocranial surface of the mastoid part of the temporal bone
