Radio Communication Practice

Who you are – Where you are – What you want. Keep it concise and professional.

Transponder Operations

VFR (usually 1200) – standard VFR code

ALT – Mode C altitude reporting ON

STBY – Standby (transponder not transmitting)

IDENT – momentarily identifies your aircraft to ATC

VFR Radar Services

A free VFR radar advisory service provided by TRACON that gives traffic advisories and basic radar monitoring.

Flight Service Stations

Call “Radio” on the appropriate frequency (or use an RCO/GCO).

Weather updates/briefings, filing or closing VFR flight plans, and other advisory information.

Lost Communications Procedures

Check volume, frequency, headset, and circuit breakers.

Squawk 7600.

Continue the flight as planned or land as soon as practicable.

Watch for light-gun signals if near an airport.

Monitor 121.5 if possible.

Emergency Procedures (121.5 & Codes)

121.5 MHz (Guard). Use for any distress or urgency situation, or to monitor for ELT signals.

Three emergency transponder codes

7500 = Hijacking / unlawful interference

7600 = Lost communications

7700 = General emergency

Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT)

Ensure it is installed, operational, and inspected/tested as required (normally annually or after certain events). Battery must be current. Required under FAR 91.207 for most operations.
