Buffer Solution
A solution composed of a weak acid and its conjugate weak base that maintains a relatively constant pH level.
Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation
A formula used to calculate the pH of a buffer solution: pH = pKa + log([A-]/[HA]).
Ka (Acid Dissociation Constant)
A measure of the strength of an acid in solution, calculated from the concentration of products and reactants.
pKa
The negative logarithm of the Ka, used to express the acidity of a solution; pKa = -log(Ka).
Acid-Base Reaction
A reaction that occurs between an acid and a base, typically resulting in the formation of water and a salt.
Ratio of Acid to Base
The relationship between the amounts of conjugate acid and base in a buffer, crucial for determining pH.
