Hematopoietic medications
Medications that increase the production of blood cells.
Hematopoiesis
The process of blood cell production occurring primarily in the bone marrow.
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood.
Leukocytes
White blood cells that are part of the immune system.
Platelets
Small cell fragments that help in blood clotting, derived from megakaryocytes.
Hematopoietic stem cells
Progenitor cells in the bone marrow that can differentiate into various blood cell types.
Lymphoid progenitors
Cells that can develop into lymphoblasts and further differentiate into T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, or natural killer cells.
Myeloid progenitors
Cells that can differentiate into erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, or immune cells like monocytes and neutrophils.
Growth factors
Specific chemicals that signal hematopoietic stem cells to differentiate into mature blood cells.
GM-CSF
Granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor that stimulates myeloid progenitors and speeds up maturation of immune cells.
G-CSF
Granulocyte colony stimulating factor that specifically induces myeloblasts to mature into neutrophils.
Thrombopoietin
A glycoprotein that stimulates the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into megakaryocytes and platelets.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone produced in the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells.
Sargramostim
A synthetic version of GM-CSF used to boost myeloid precursor production after bone marrow transplant.
Filgrastim
A recombinant G-CSF used to correct neutropenia and increase neutrophil production.
Romiplostim
A recombinant thrombopoietin used to stimulate platelet production in thrombocytopenia.
Eltrombopag
A synthetic drug that acts as an agonist at the thrombopoietin receptor to stimulate megakaryocyte production.
Epoetin
A recombinant erythropoietin used to treat anemia, especially in chronic renal failure.
Bone marrow suppression
A condition where the bone marrow's ability to produce blood cells is reduced, often due to chemotherapy or radiation.
Anemia
A condition characterized by a low red blood cell count, leading to fatigue and weakness.
