Oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) transport. Hemoglobin in red blood cells, and myoglobin in muscle cells are the iron-containing proteins that transport these gases.

Meats (they are red because they contain hemoglobin and myoglobin). Chlorophyll the green pigment in plants also has iron, but it has very poor bioavailability (=not absorbed well)
