What is a korowai?
A korowai is a special and highly prestigious type of Māori cloak.
What did elaborate korowai traditionally represent?
They represented a person's status and mana within their tribe.
Who traditionally wore the most elaborate korowai?
Chiefs and people of high standing.
Why might a korowai be given as a gift?
It could be given to someone outside the community who was considered to have equally high standing.
What was the significance of the korowai given to Ms Ardern?
It was given to Ms Ardern by Ngāti Rānana, a Māori group in London, to wear at the Commonwealth Summit in 2018.
What is the purpose of our class korowai?
It represents our class and the expectations we have for each other when learning about Te Ao Māori.

It represents the way we behave and treat each other, with our expectations woven together to create a positive, encouraging and respectful classroom.

Unity, solidarity, togetherness and working as one.
