Conditioning

The process of learning associations between environmental events and behavioral responses.

Conditioned response (CR)

A learned reaction to a stimulus that was previously neutral.

Neutral stimulus (NS)

A stimulus that initially produces no response until it’s paired with an unconditioned stimulus.

Unconditioned stimulus (US)

A stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response.

Cognition

The mental processes involved in thinking, knowing, remembering, and learning.

Cognitive maps

Mental representations of physical or conceptual spaces.

Extinction (psychology)

The weakening or disappearance of a learned response when reinforcement stops.

Association

The connection formed between two stimuli or between a behavior and its consequence.

Stimulus generalization

Responding to stimuli that are similar to the original conditioned stimulus.
