Principles of Design
Are guidelines to follow if you want to create effective visuals, from oil paintings and blog graphics to eye-catching social media posts.
Balance
Is an equal distribution of of the graphics' visual weight which is determined by its size, darkness or lightness, and thickness of lines.
Symmetrical Balance
An arrangement of elements distributed evenly.
Asymmetrical Balance
An arrangement of unlike objects of equal weight on each side of the page.
Unity
This considers when all elements. are in agreement. It is a force operating in within a design that gives it the appearance of oneness or resolution.
Contrast
It is the difference of two or more elements in a design. It is most commonly associated with readability, legibility, and accessibility.
Emphasis
Can sometimes be referred to as dominance. If contrast deals with difference between elements, emphasis deals with the impact of the element.
Repetition
It is the recurrence of a design element, commonly utilized in patterns and textures. It promotes consistency which shows an effort of unifying all parts of the design.
Hierarchy
It is not based on design styles but rather the order of importance. A good design leads the eye through each area in a priority order.
Proximity
Its basic purpose is to organize or group related elements and items together, move them physically close to each other so that they can be perceived as one. An organized information is more readable, easier to understand and more likely to be remembered.
