Tissues
cells of similar type and function clustered into layers, sheets, or groups
What are the four primary types of tissue?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
What is the special purpose of epithelial tissue?
covers and lines
What is the special purpose of connective tissue?
provides support
What is the special purpose of muscle tissue?
enables movement
What is the special purpose of nervous tissue?
controls work
Epithelial Tissue
Composed of sheets of cells that cover and line other tissues; also known as Epithelia
Where is Epithelial Tissue found?
bladder, mouth, blood vessels, thorax, cavities and ducts of the body
What are the functions of the Epithelial Tissue?
It covers and lines, filters substances, absorbs nutrients, provides sensory input, manufactures secretions, manufactures excretions
What are the classifications of Epithelial Tissue?
shape of cells, number of layers, presence of surface specialization
What is the shape of cells in Epithelial tissue?
Cuboidal, Squamous, Columnar
What is the number of layers in Epithelial Tissue?
Simple, stratified, psuedostratified
Epithelia
Epithelial Tissue
What is Gross Anatomy?
The study of anatomical structure that can be seen with the naked eye such as bones and muscles; also known as macroscopic anatomy
What is microscopic anatomy?
Study of anatomical structure that can be seen with a microscope such as tissues and organs; also known as histology
Glandular epithelia
Epithelia that engage in the manufacture and release of substances
Excretions
substances that leave the body (sweat, urine, feces)
Secretions
Substances that remain in the body (regulatory molecules and mucus)
What are the characteristics of Epithelia?
1) Epithelial cells are polar (have apical and basal surfaces)
2) Have lateral surfaces connected to neighboring cells by junctional complexes
3) All epithelial cells lack blood vessels or capillaries (avascular)
4) Most epithelial cells are innervated and provide sensory input
Junctional complexes
plasma membrane of epithelial cells that are joined to form specialized attachments
What are the three major types of cellular junction?
Tight junctions, desmosomes, gap junctions
Tight Junction
Formed by fusion of the othermost layers of the plasma membrane of adjourning cells
Where can tight junctions be found?
Tissues in where there can be no leaks, Urinary bladder or digestive tract
Desmosome
Strong welded plaque or thickening which connects the plasma membranes of adjacent cells. Echini al coupling formed by filaments that interlock with one another
