What is the main function of the respiratory system?
bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide from the body.
What are the four parts of gas exchange in the respiratory system?
Ventilation
External respiration
Transport of gases
Internal respiration
What are alveoli, and what is their function?
Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs
Explain what happens in the conducting zone and respiratory zone
Conducting zone: Air is filtered, warmed, and humidified (no gas exchange).
Respiratory zone: Actual gas exchange occurs in the alveoli.
what is the difference between tidal volume and vital capacity
Tidal volume: Amount of air inhaled/exhaled during normal breathing.
Vital capacity: Maximum amount of air a person can exhale after a full inhale
What are some disorders that cause respiratory distress?
asthma pneuomina
Describe the difference between the type of cells found along the respiratory tract and why they have the shape they do
Upper tract: Ciliated columnar cells (move mucus and trap particles).
Alveoli: Simple squamous cells (thin and flat for fast gas exchange).
Thin shape in alveoli allows oxygen and CO₂ to diffuse quickly.
What is hyperventilation?
Breathing too quickly or deeply, causing too much CO₂ to be expelled from the body.
Why is it “harder” to breathe in high elevations?
There is less oxygen in the air.
How does the respiratory system maintain homeostasis
Maintains homeostasis by regulating O₂, removing CO₂, and controlling blood pH through changes in breathing rate.
