Chapter 1 Plot
Selena wears a skirt on her hat and her teacher gets mad at her. Her teacher calls her parents then. When Selena returns home, her dad was angry and asked why she had a skirt on her hat. Selena explains her friends challenged her to do so. Her dad tells her she cannot be doing crazy things. Selena persuades him to sing to her so he isn’t mad. Her dad, who plays guitar, sings “We Belong Together” by Richie Valens to her. He explains he used to be part of the group “Los Dinos” and played this song. Selena sings along and the dad is surprised, getting the idea to form a musical group with his children. Several days later, he brings home an electric guitar, drum, and microphone. His wife asks why he has all those instruments and finding out the reason, she says they don’t have the time or money for instruments. Her husband ignores her and calls Selena, A.B, and Suzy for his plan. He explains his plan and gives everyone their instruments. Suzy gets the drums and is irritated because girls don’t play drums. But she has no other choice. Every day, the children practiced Rock n Roll and religious music. Religious music is important to their family. At first they wanted to play with their friends but stuck to practicing. Over time, the dad found several places where his children could sing and earn money. The children played at these places and received applause only. The applause motivated them to continue playing. Their mother was still worried about the future of the group though.

Chapter 2 Plot
At the beginning of the chapter, Selena earns two hundred dollars for playing with her siblings at a fair. Marcela, Selena’s mom, continues to feel uneasy about her children playing instruments. She was worried about the family’s economic situation. This was because her children did not make enough money from playing instruments. Marcela was also worried that her husband was more interested in music than actual work. The family continued to play at restaurants, clubs, and private events, not making enough money. Abraham then gets the idea to open a restaurant. He talks to Marcela about this. Abraham knows Texans love Mexican food and he can use the people who come to his restaurant to listen to his children play. Marcela can even cook. Marcela is hesitant at first, but agrees to the idea. Soon, the restaurant is opened and is called Papagayos. At first, people come mainly for the food. Then upon hearing the children sing, they come for the children. Primo Ledesma, a radio program representative, hears the children at Papagayos and invites Selena to his radio show. Selena sings on the show, getting offered $2000 to sing at a concert. Suddenly, between 1980-82, the US falls into an economic recession. People stop eating out, even at Papagayos. This creates several money problems for the Quintallinas and they have to abandon Papagayos. The family goes to live with Abraham’s brother in El Campo, Texas. But they do not stop hoping for a good future. Abraham renames his children’s group to “Selena y Los Dinos".”
